ONCE UPON A TIME
THERE WAS A COFFEE BEAN...
... to be precise, a coffee bean from VOX Kaffee, a traditional coffee brand from Groneweg and Meintrup in Münster. In the 1950s, it surprised everyone with an absolute novelty: freeze dried coffee. The first German instant coffee is born - pour on hot water, stir, ready!
Gently dried, long-lasting, vacuum-packed - an invaluable advantage in times when by no means every household had an electric refrigerator. To this day, instant coffee is the most common freeze dried product.
When the VOX brand is sold to Melitta-Werke in the early 1970s, Dieter and Ursula Groneweg, the third generation, are already professionals in the field of freeze drying. Why not use this process to preserve other foods in a particularly gentle way? No sooner said than done.
